Uncukubili njeng'empisi

You are two-coloured like a hyena.

What it means
A hyena's mottled coat has no single color to stand behind, just like people who say one thing to one listener and another thing to the next. Being the same person to everyone is what separates honesty from performance.

Source and context
From: Zulu, Southern Africa
Source: isiZulu (South Africa) oral-tradition proverb (Uncukubili njeng'empisi), translation and explanation from the Ulwazi Programme's "Zulu Proverbs" page (ulwaziprogramme.org). Earlier recorded here as also in C.L.S. Nyembezi, "Zulu Proverbs"; that book was not read

The source explains it: you say different things to different people in order to get their approval instead of speaking and behaving honestly. The wording of the meaning is ours.
