Sango

Central Africa

The Sango are a riverine people of the Central African Republic and northern DR Congo, historically settled along the Ubangi River as skilled canoemen and fishermen. Their language, developed from Northern Ngbandi as a trade language along the river, has since become the everyday lingua franca of nearly the entire Central African Republic.

This proverb uses that as a flat rule about origin: what a person, family, or institution actually produces reflects what they truly are, not what they might claim to be. It's less about appearances changing than about tracing an outcome back to its real source.
