Character and habits set early are the ones that hold: this proverb treats childhood specifically as the window when shaping actually works, the same way a material has to be worked while it's still workable. It's less a rule about children specifically than a comment on timing: some things can only be formed early, or not formed at all.

Le caractère et les habitudes ancrés tôt sont ceux qui tiennent : ce proverbe traite spécifiquement l'enfance comme la fenêtre où façonner fonctionne réellement, de la même façon qu'une matière doit être travaillée tant qu'elle est encore malléable. C'est moins une règle sur les enfants en particulier qu'un constat sur le moment : certaines choses ne peuvent être formées que tôt, ou pas du tout.
