Acholi

East Africa

The Acholi are a Luo-speaking, Western Nilotic people whose ancestors migrated from southern Sudan into what is now northern Uganda between the 15th and 19th centuries. Their traditional homeland is still called Acholiland, and Acholi communities live across northern Uganda and into South Sudan.

Song of Lawino, one of the most celebrated works of African literature, was written in the Acholi language by poet Okot p'Bitek, who then translated it into English himself.

Proverbs (3)

Hardened gourd is softened by fire.
A gourd that has gone hard and brittle will not bend for anything gentle; only real heat, applied directly, softens it back into something workable. This proverb uses that as a blunt truth about people too: sometimes understanding only arrives after something genuinely difficult forces it.
The banana tree produces what kills it.
A banana tree gives everything it has to its fruit, and dies from exactly that effort once the fruit ripens. This proverb reaches for that image to describe parents: raising children costs something real, sometimes everything, and that cost is the point, not a flaw in the arrangement.
A roaring lion does not catch any prey.
The noise a lion makes announcing itself is the opposite of what actually catches anything: real hunting is silent. This proverb applies that same logic to people: loud claims and warnings about what you're about to do tend to cost you the advantage that quiet, unannounced action would have kept.

Apio
Given to the first-born of twins (female form of Opio).
Ocen
Given to the second-born of twins, from "cen", meaning "behind", reflecting the second twin's position in birth order.
Okello
Given to a child born after a set of twins. One of the best-known Acholi names outside Uganda (borne by former Ugandan president Tito Okello).
Opio
Given to the first-born of twins. Acholi naming strongly marks birth order and the circumstances of birth, and twin births carry their own dedicated set of names.
