The Luo are Kenya’s fourth-largest ethnic group, settled mainly along the eastern shore of Lake Victoria after a centuries-long migration from what is now South Sudan. Unlike many of their fellow Nilotic-speaking peoples, who built their economies around cattle, the Luo have traditionally relied on fishing Lake Victoria and its rivers.
Luo society is patrilineal and historically combined pastoralism with fishing on Lake Victoria and farming. They’re one of relatively few major Nilotic groups in East Africa to rely heavily on fishing rather than cattle alone.
